Guide: How to Start a Legacy in The Sims

Guide: How to Start a Legacy in The Sims

Starting a legacy in The Sims can be an exciting challenge, especially if it’s your first time. Even if you’re a creator of legacy challenges, you might find that setting up a new legacy is a unique experience for everyone. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you get started. For more insights and inspiration, you can also check out my recent post, Get Everything Out of The Sims 4:

Step 1: Begin with a Single Sim

It’s tempting to create a full family in Create-a-Sim (CAS), but starting with a single Sim is often the better choice. Here’s why:

  • Flexibility: During gameplay, you might encounter better potential partners than the one you created in CAS. It’s better to keep your options open.

  • Control: By starting with one Sim, you can focus on building their skills, career, and the foundation of your legacy.

Design a Sim that inspires you, with unique traits, aspirations, and a look you love.

Step 2: Choose a Challenge

Legacy challenges add structure and fun to your gameplay. Here are the ones I chose to play:

  1. Not So Berry Legacy Challenge: Created by LilSimsie, this challenge focuses on colorful generations and specific gameplay goals. Each generation revolves around a specific color and theme.

  2. H2O Legacy Challenge: Created by SimLana18, this ocean-themed challenge includes mermaids and other water-based elements. While vastly different from the Not So Berry challenge, you can combine both families for a unique experience.

The best part? Once you finish one challenge, you can jump straight into another without creating a new family. This keeps the history of previous generations alive while pursuing new goals.

Step 3: Work Your Way Up

Starting from scratch is part of the fun and challenge of a legacy. For more tips on starting with limited resources, refer to my recent post, Get Everything Out of The Sims 4. Here are some tips: from scratch is part of the fun and challenge of a legacy. Here are some tips:

  • Pick a Modest Lot: A small, inexpensive lot gives you room to grow while keeping the challenge realistic.

  • Focus on Essential Skills: Develop skills that help your Sim survive and succeed in their career or hobbies.

  • Make Strategic Choices: Plan your Sim’s career, relationships, and spending carefully, as every decision shapes your legacy’s story.

Step 4: Document Your Journey

One of the joys of playing a legacy is capturing its story. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Screenshots and Videos: Regularly capture milestones and funny moments.

  • Keep a Journal: Write about your Sim’s experiences, either in-game or externally, like in a blog.

  • Share with the Community: Post updates on social media or forums to share your legacy with others.

Step 5: Add Your Own Twist

While challenges provide a framework, don’t hesitate to customize the experience to your liking. For example:

  • Combine the Not So Berry Legacy with the H2O Legacy for colorful, ocean-themed generations.

  • Introduce supernatural elements, like vampires, witches, or aliens.

  • Create your own unique challenge with personal goals and rules.

Step 6: Enjoy and Experiment

The most important part of starting a legacy is to have fun. Experiment with different play styles, challenges, and stories. Remember, there is no "right" way to play a legacy. Let your creativity flow and discover what works best for you!

Good luck with your legacy adventures!
